RANGAVALLI 2019
Redress Design Award
The colletion was presented at the Centrestage Fashion showcase in Hong Kong as part of the Redress Design Award.
This collection is inspired by the significance of the land and what it means to us in our home, our town and in our culture. Everyday the land in front of our houses are washed and decorated with designs called 'rangavalli' as a sign of respect. And the soil from the very land is a source of income to our town for 100’s of years through the terracotta pottery.
The aim is to create clothes from materials that would otherwise end up polluting the land and to create awareness and a connection to the land and soil, with a contemporary usage of traditional upcycling and zero waste techniques. The whole collection is made from upcycling old sarees, pre consumer production textile waste and unsold trims. The patterns are completely zero waste. Few of the panels are made from hand weaving and overlapping, ribbons and saree borders. The old sarees are quilted with traditional Indian hand embroidery.
